The park is home to Tequesta, the Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education, and Research Center as well as a range of natural habitats, including Sand pine Flatwoods, pine mangroves, pine Flatwoods, and river swamps. There is also the Loxahatchee River, declared to be a National Wild and Scenic River in 1985, which flows across the entire park. The park also runs situated along the Ocean to Lake Trail.
